Assistant Properties Director

PURPOSE OF POSITION
To produce the props necessary for each production and to assume management functions in the absence of the Property Director

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Five years or more properties management experience.

SKILLS REQUIRED
Knowledge of all disciplines used in the production of props and special abilities in crafts, fabric, special effects and paper props. Must have a valid driver's license. Can lift and carry 50 pounds. Computer: Photoshop, Microsoft Office, AutoCad a plus. Familiarity working with electronics, pneumatics and pyrotechnics a plus.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Assistant: In the absence of or by delegation by the Properties Director (approximately 50% of duties)

  • Help coordinate activities of the department with the designer and director, other production departments, stage management and actors;
  • Attends production meetings and tech rehearsals as assigned.
  • Attend Design and Director discussions and meetings to help determine needs of the shows.
  • Maintain stock of furniture, soft goods, hand props, etc., for use in rehearsal or productions or rentals to outside groups. This includes maintaining an inventory of holdings as well as physically arranging the items in storage areas.
  • Assist Prop Director with paperwork: Purchase Orders, petty cash, notes etc.
  • Help maintain current project list for shows with staff
  • Hold morning meetings and disperse the daily schedule/information/notes in the absence of Properties Director
  • Read and act on rehearsal and performance notes and report to Prop Director and Stage Management on the progress.
  • Purchasing and shopping for shop and staff as required

Artisan: Build props as assigned: soft goods, paper props, carpentry, painting, crafts etc. (approximately 50% of duties)

  • Pull props and furniture from storage areas
  • Build mock-ups of prop elements to be used in rehearsal.
  • Help maintain props during run of a play and/or instruct running crew in use or maintenance of props.
  • Pull, build and organize set dressing, hand props, paper props, food props, special effects etc.
  • Research design elements and/or specific items according to period and needs of a production.
  • Develop creative solutions to meet functional and aesthetic requirements using various methods, materials, and techniques
